Before COVID-19, some public servants travelled business class when travelling for work.
The COVID-19 restrictions showed that many functions can be carried out with new
technology and that it is not always necessary to travel.
Under a Country Liberal Government, the following two initiatives would be enacted within
the Northern Territory Public Service:
1. All meetings would be assessed as to whether it is possible to hold the meeting
remotely utilising cameras and tele meeting software, and if yes, then the meeting
would be held via teleconference.
2. All travel by Northern Territory public servants would be economy-class, with no
exceptions for Ministers, Chief Executives, or any other position.
This policy is designed to save money on travel, and is therefore important from a financial
perspective. However, it is also important demonstrate to the Territory community that the
government recognises the very high levels of debt and there is a need for economising
across all levels.
A Country Liberal Government would also strongly encourage taxpayer-funded
organisations registered under Northern Territory law, such as municipal and regional
councils and universities, to follow the new policy.
