Territorians ready to benefit from CLP’s home ownership grants

May 17, 2024

Media Release from Leader of the Opposition Lia Finocchiaro and Shadow Minister for Business, Jobs and Training Marie-Clare Boothby:

The CLP has been swamped with Territory home buyers ready to build or buy their new home using the CLP’s new HomeGrown Territory Program.

“The CLP is helping Territorians stay in the Territory through its HomeGrown and FreshStart home grants which will give Territorians, even if they currently own a home of have owned a home before, the opportunity to help build a new home. From first home buyers to seniors, Home Grown Territory will support Territorians into a new home.

“We want Territorians to have the opportunity to rightsize their homes with a generous $30,000 grant if they build a new home.

“This is important because it means Territory mums and dads who are ‘empty nesters’ , can rightsize into a new home, new unit or new apartment with the help of $30,000.

“Their family home can then be rented out or sold freeing up larger homes for young families who can use the $10,000 first home grant for existing homes to support the purchase.

“Our Territory seniors who want to ‘right size’ to a smaller home, unit or apartment will also be supported by the CLP, with $30,000 to help build or buy them brand new or off the plan,” Mrs Finocchiaro said.

In touring a 1250 sm block of land for sale at 9 Daly Street with approvals for 75 units, local real estate agent Ryan Doyle from LJ Hooker, said the program would provide developers with confidence to bring new supply on to the market.

“It's difficult at this stage for developers to get projects out of the ground and to make developments feasible. So this new scheme will definitely assist with the feasibility of projects. The other thing that I like about a benefit of the scheme also is that there's no cap, so it doesn't actually put a ceiling on what buyers are willing to pay,” Mr Doyle said.

Addressing the cost of living, NT Property Council Executive Director Ruth Palmer welcomed the announcement.

“So we know that cost of living is tough, we know that people are doing it tough out there. So being able to provide some incentives in the current environment that we're in, is super important, especially when we are trying to grow the population and to obviously get the workforce here to the Territory. And with FreshStart as well that's obviously going to increase population,” Ms Palmer said.

Shadow Minister Marie-Clare Boothby said Labor has shown they aren’t interested in helping Territorians with the high cost of living.

“The Chief Minister has called the CLPs home owner scheme that will give Territorians a head start into home ownership, a ‘brain fart’.”

“Thousands of Territorians move interstate every year because of our high rates of crime and cost of living.

“Territorians have a very clear choice.”
